The dental industry has seen its fair share of technological advancement over the years. Just recently 3D printing was introduced and its applications are countless at the moment. Recently, however, there has been a huge debate on whether dental technology and robo-dentist can be viewed in one aspect. Most people believe that robo-dentists are not dental technology advancements since robots can never truly replace doctors. According to research, most patients, especially in the US are reluctant when it comes to the idea of using robotic dentists.
Robo-dentists
Embry-[Riddle Aeronautical University recently carried out an online survey to determine how people felt about the idea of introducing robotic dentists. Some of the common procedures that robo-dentists are projected to perform include the following:
- Tooth extraction
- Teeth cleaning
- Root canal
- Bonding
- Teeth whitening
- Applying a cap
- Applying in braces
- Gum surgery
- Putting in filling
Applying sealant
The respondents were asked whether they would let a robot perform the above procedures instead of a person. Participants were quick to allow robots to carry out less invasive procedures such as teeth whitening and cleaning. However, many participants were reluctant when it came to more invasive procedures like gum surgery, root canals, and dental fillings.
Most of the participants felt like robots were not advanced and sophisticated enough to carry out more invasive dental procedures. However, when the participants were asked whether they would consider robot dental healthcare if it would cost half the price, most of them were inclined to accept the price.
This research was carried out to give ideas and feedback to robotic engineers who were thinking of revolutionizing dental technology and robo-dentist development.
Will robo-dentists replace human dentists?
According to most researchers and dentists, robots are not something new in medicine. The robots already being used act as excellent tools that help improve precision when carrying out certain procedures.
When you walk into a dentist’s office right now, you are bound to come across some form of robotics that is already being used. However, robo-dentists cannot replace human dentists simply because they cannot show human empathy and recognition of what you are going through.
The human aspect is pretty important and it cannot be replaced by robots. Yes, a robot can be taught the common human cues by observing certain body changes, but there can never be a replacement for the compassion that you feel during human interaction.
When will robo-dentists be available?
Medical tech companies and dentists are still several years away from inventing a fully autonomous robo-dentist. However, they are growing closer with each passing day and we need to be aware of that fact.
Recently, a robot dentist in China replaced a dental implant and according to the Chinese, the procedure was a huge success. Although a human programmed the measurements used, the robot did the entire procedure.

Improved dental technology and Robo-dentist advancement is certainly great news when it comes to the dental industry. Soon enough dental procedures will take short periods and precision during surgery will cease to be a problem for dentists. It is certainly time we embrace the changes and technology, especially in the health sector.
